Tasting Notes

Sterling Vineyards' 2023 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc presents a pale lemon hue in the glass. On the nose, bright citrus aromas of lemon and lime mingle with white floral notes and hints of guava and passion fruit, tropical scents characteristic of Sauvignon Blanc grown in Calistoga's warm climate. The portion of blend aged in French oak imparts a touch of lemon meringue sweetness and balances the pure fruit expression of that aged in stainless steel, resulting in a wine which is both textured and remarkably fresh. With subtle flavors of green melon and herbs, the crisp palate is driven by racy acidity, making this wine an excellent choice for either solo-sipping or pairing with light, fresh meals.

Winemaking

Sauvignon Blanc grapes were picked in the cool hours of the early morning and brought immediately into the winery for pressing. Juice was fermented in a combination of stainless steel tanks, stainless steel barrels, and neutral French oak barrels. This combination of fermentation vessels allows the wine to retain the crisp, fruit-forward flavors of the varietal, as well as highlight texture and enhance complexity in the final blend. The wine aged separately in these vessels for five months before blending together.

Vintage

One of the longest growing seasons in over a decade, 2023 offered consistent and mild weather throughout, presenting above-average crop yields and extended hang-time. Ample winter and spring rains set the stage for a reinvigorated vineyard, granting us healthy, saturated soils and full reservoirs. Bud break arrived nearly a month after what is typically expected, which led to a delayed set and protracted flowering, all of which, ultimately, contributed to a delayed harvest. A mild summer allowed the grapes to mature slowly and evenly, retain their natural acidity and deliver truly balanced wines.

Vineyard

Fruit for the 2023 Sauvignon Blanc comes from Larsen Ranch, Sterling's estate vineyard in Calistoga. Located at the northern and warmer end of Napa Valley, it's planted with a mix of younger and older vines which experience extreme diurnal shifts during the summer. Grapes ripen fully and develop intense fruit character over the course of long summer days, but cool nights preserve excellent fruit acidity which sines in the final bottling.
