Winemaking
Our winemakers took a purist approach to show how this rare variety can excel in Napa Valley and highlighted the Malbec grape’s pleasing aromatics, color, and tannin profile in this wine. The grapes underwent a brief maceration period designed to gently extract flavor, color, and tannin from the skins. The wine was aged in French oak barrels (48% new) for 20 months to preserve the pure expression and freshness of the Malbec fruit.Vintage
The first half of the 2022 harvest started calm and early, with healthy vineyards offering fruit with bright acidity, fruit-forward flavors, and strong yields for white varietals and thin-skinned reds, like Pinot Noir. Then, California experienced a historic heat wave in early September that ramped up the pace of ripening, compelling a fast and furious harvest as winemakers worked to pick fruit at its best quality. Fortunately, strong vines and proactive irrigation helped many vineyards survive the heat. The second half was much more predictable with cooler temperatures through October, so that later-ripening red varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, could develop their full flavor and tannin profile.Vineyard
The Malbec grapes for this bottling were sourced from across Napa Valley, including Oakville, Yountville, and the southern most regions of the valley. Sourcing from these appellations within Napa Valley brought bright and fresh Malbec with vibrant acidity, alongside the variety’s typical plush dark fruit characteristics.
