Tasting Notes

A brilliant garnet color, the 2022 Pinot Noir tantalizes the nose with pleasing aromas of strawberry, acai, rhubarb, and thyme. Its rich complement of dark berry flavors has a bright, well-balanced core of black cherry and red currant that delights the palate and shows great finesse. Delicate vanilla notes from the nicely integrated new oak add complexity, and its heavier mouthfeel gracefully holds weight and structure. Distinctly different, this Pinot Noir leaves a wonderful lasting impression that will satisfy any wine connoisseur. Drink now or hold.

Winemaking

Pinot Noir grapes were picked at optimum ripeness when color, flavor, and tannins were in sync. Once in the winery, the grapes were destemmed and gently fermented in stainless steel to preserve the varietal’s delicate nature. To capture the wine’s natural complexity fully, it underwent a secondary, malolactic fermentation and then was aged for 8 months in 100% French oak, 40% of which were new barrels.

Vintage

The winter of 2022 was warm and dry, with rain and cooler weather passing through only toward the end of March. The mild spring gave an early start to growing season, while the summer surprised us with cool mornings and warmer afternoons. As a result, the harvest yielded small berries with concentrated flavors and remarkable acidity, from which wines of exceptional balance and taste were derived.

Vineyard

Grace Benoist Ranch, located in the far northwest corner of the Los Carneros appellation, is the source for this wine’s selected fruit. Unlike most Carneros vineyards, which are largely uplifted bay bottoms with clay soil composition, the soils on Grace Benoist Ranch are volcanic in origin. This site’s well-draining, rocky upland soil and location close to the Pacific Ocean and San Pablo Bay make it an ideal place to grow Burgundian varieties. Vineyard blocks are individually managed to conform to various soil types and the changing contours of the topography. Individual vineyards within Grace Benoist Ranch average only eight acres in size, and spacing is dense to ensure low per-vine yields of fully concentrated fruit.
