Tasting Notes

A strikingly deep, dark ruby color, this 2021 Ranch No. 2 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits pronounced oak character on its nose, with aspects of mocha espresso, black pepper, and freshly sharpened pencil lead. A subtle coco-powder sweetness ushers in saturated blue and black fruit flavors of cassis and blackberry that evolve on the palate to a more savory, fresh chaparral herb profile of bay laurel and wild sage, the distinctive essence of Rutherford. Profoundly complex, this Cabernet Sauvignon will age well and reward patience with even greater focus, refinement, and density. Consider cellaring this wine for at least 15 years.

Winemaking

To develop this wine’s complex fruit expression, we first cold-soaked the destemmed grapes for gentle flavor extraction. During fermentation, regular pump-overs incorporated the flavor-rich skins into the juice. Malolactic fermentation, which naturally changes the malic acid into softer lactic acid, rounded its flavors. The wine was then aged for19 months exclusively in French oak barrels (90% new).

Vintage

The 2021 season was joyous and welcome after the challenges of prior vintages. Harvest yielded exceptionally fine fruit, some of the best in recent years. Early winter rains led to almost no notable precipitation for the rest of the growing season, providing ideal weather for grapes to flower, bloom, and set in early spring. Budbreak occurred early in April, followed by flowering and bloom in May. The summer saw early and even ripening throughout the valley, with veraison beginning in early July. Due in part to drought conditions, harvest yields were low, and grapes were intensely flavored and smaller in berry size. One of the earliest starts, harvest began with white wine grapes in late July and proceeded with red wine grapes about a month later, at the end of August. From these optimally ripe and flavorful grapes our winemakers crafted lush, fruity wines with amazing color extraction, aromatic intensity, balance, and structure. 2021 was a tremendous year to taste the nuances and terroir distinctions from around the valley.

Vineyard

Fruit for this wine was sourced from our historic Beaulieu Vineyard Ranch No. 2 on the southern Rutherford bench. The 140-acre vineyard, planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon, enjoys optimal sun exposure and experiences cooling influences from regular morning fog, allowing for a long even growing season. BV Ranch No. 2 is known for producing full-bodied concentrated wines which highlight the appellation’s signature Rutherford Dust flavor profile.
