Tasting Notes

Soft, spring cherry blossom and summery red fruit aromas drift from the glass of Beaulieu Vineyard’s 2021 Ranch No. 1 Cabernet Sauvignon. On the palate, flavors of fresh, sweet plum and rich, chocolate-covered cherries are accented by oak spice and framed by plush tannins for an exceptionally well-structured wine. The brightness and balance of this wine’s fresh acidity lingers through the finish, making it age-worthy, but truly approachable and enjoyable now.

Winemaking

After night-harvesting, grapes were immediately delivered to the winery where they were destemmed and cold-soaked for seven days to gently preserve color and flavor. During the roughly twelve-day fermentation, timely pump-overs kept the skins in contact with the juice for excellent flavor and tannin extraction. The wine spent 20-months in French oak barrels to impart refined tannins and beautiful toasted wood notes to the final blend.

Vintage

The 2021 season was joyous and welcome after the challenges of prior vintages. Harvest yielded exceptionally fine fruit, some of the best in recent years. Early winter rains led to almost no notable precipitation for the rest of the growing season, providing ideal weather for grapes to flower, bloom, and set in early spring. Budbreak occurred early in April, followed by flowering and bloom in May. The summer saw early and even ripening throughout the valley, with veraison beginning in early July. Due in part to drought conditions, harvest yields were low, and grapes were intensely flavored and smaller in berry size. One of the earliest starts, harvest began with white wine grapes in late July and proceeded with red wine grapes about a month later, at the end of August. From these optimally ripe and flavorful grapes our winemakers crafted lush, fruity wines with amazing color extraction, aromatic intensity, balance, and structure. 2021 was a tremendous year to taste the nuances and terroir distinctions from around the valley.

Vineyard

Planted in the early 1900s in the heart of Rutherford, Ranch No. 1 is a 128-acre property that encompasses the original Georges de Latour Estate. The vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot on the Rutherford Bench, which comprises a variety of alluvial soils that foster exceptional quality in Bordeaux-style varietals. The well-draining gravel loam soils allow for deep rooting and the development of grapes with complex flavors.
