“Black plum, ripe cherry, dark chocolate, black tea and hazelnut. Gravel and pine, too. Hints of vanilla. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, powdery tannins. Beautifully spiced and perfumed with subtle minerality. ” - James Suckling, January 2021

    Vinous

“The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Pauli Vineyard is lifted and open, especially for a young Howell Mountain wine. Dried herbs red fruit, game, mint, blood orange and cinnamon develop in the glass, framed by silky tannins that extend the finish. Pretty floral notes reappear with time, adding aromatic presence. The Pauli is a bit wild and rustic, but otherwise nicely done.” - Antonio Galloni, March 2021

Vintage

Winter rain in January and February of 2018 eased long drought conditions. After a relatively wet winter, both bud break and flowering occurred later than average, but under ideal weather conditions, creating plentiful and even fruit set. Warm summer temperatures with generous sun exposure moderated by cool marine influences in the mornings and evenings, allowed for a long summer growing season, virtually uninterrupted by any major heat spikes. The mild summer run was followed by extended fall sunshine with moderate heat and no early rains, creating near-ideal conditions to allow fruit extended hang time for gradual ripening, increase sugar levels and flavor complexity development.

Vineyard

Pauli Vineyard is located on Howell Mountain. The 15-acre vineyard has volcanic-based soils that are restrictive and thus foster grapes of great intensity and structure. Pauli Vineyard first appeared in the Private Reserve blend at the 2009 vintage. Pauli Cabernet shows a luscious fruit core from the outset, accentuated by ripe tannins.
